Juanito was born in the town of Urubamba located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Cusco, Peru in October 20th 1980.
He started kayaking at a very young age (8 years old) because of his father, Tony de Ugarte who was National Champion in the 80's. Thanks to this and all his dedication to the sport, he had the opportunity to travel around the world for various international competitions, giving him the opportunity to interact with many of the best kayakers in the world.
In 2012 he became part of the Tribe Rider Team, he was coach in the Keeners program in the Ottawa Kayak School since 2013 and finally he became part of the Jackson Kayaks Team in 2014.
Juanito passed away on November 13th 2014 after running Salto de Nilahue a unique waterfall in Los Rios, southern region of Chile.
The Juanito de Ugarte Memorial Scholarship is a project that provides an opportunity for Peruvian and Latin American children and teenagers to be part of a personal development program and progress in whitewater kayaking.
We train healthy, safe and ecologically responsible athletes under a curriculum inspired and adapted for Peru from the prestigious “Keeners” program of the “Ottawa Kayak School” (OKS) in Ottawa (Canada).
