In 2015, the first winner of the JDU Memorial Scholarship was Angela Baca, a 12-year-old girl from Abancay. She was motivated to apply by her family and uncle, the recognized and experienced Peruvian kayaker Julio Baca. Thanks to the program, Angela greatly improved her paddling technique with renowned kayakers Seth Ashworth, Clay Wright, Stephen Wright and Anna Bruno. More importantly, she had the opportunity to travel and discover a foreign country’s history and culture for the first time and managed to boost her confidence and leadership soft skills, allowing her to work more efficiently as part of a team and have more ambitious professional goals.
